This is a new book by Andrew Gentes profiling the exile system in Russia between 1823 and 1861. Along with his first book (Exile to Siberia, 1590-1822), Andrew traces the systematic expulsion by both civilian and state authorities of criminals, political dissidents, and the handicapped and elderly to Siberia. Focusing on the reign of Nicholas I, this new book covers the period from just before he took power to just after he died. In 1861, after his death, Nicholas's successor Alexander II emancipated the serfs. This move transformed Russian societal structures, yet also set the stage for an enormous increase in the number of criminal and political offenders exiled to Siberia.
